Veritas warns of EU entry bans for social media posts in Croatia
The Documentation and Information Center Veritas has issued a warning to Serbian and Bosnian citizens traveling to Croatia regarding potential legal consequences for social media activity. According to Veritas, Croatian authorities may treat certain posts—such as those perceived as glorifying war criminals or disturbing public order—as grounds for both judicial and administrative proceedings.
While judicial outcomes may include fines or suspended prison sentences, a separate administrative process under the Law on Foreigners can be initiated by the Croatian Ministry of the Interior. This can result in expulsion and an entry ban to the European Economic Area (including the EU, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) lasting between three months and one year. Such bans are recorded in the Schengen Information System (SIS), effectively blocking access to the entire European Union.
Veritas notes that specialized services within the Croatian border and internal police monitor social media profiles, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, often retroactively reviewing past posts and stories. The warning follows recent incidents involving the arrest of a Serbian footballer and the prosecution of an artist in Croatia.
