Verón-Punta Cana municipalization faces legislative debate

Legislators in the Dominican Republic are debating two different proposals to elevate Verón-Punta Cana to the status of a municipality. While both initiatives share the same primary goal, they differ in their structural approach to territorial division.

One proposal, originating from the Senate, focuses on establishing the municipality first, with the possibility of discussing new territorial divisions at a later date. A second proposal, presented in the Chamber of Deputies, seeks to simultaneously create the municipality along with the municipal districts of Punta Cana and La Ceiba del Salado.

The debate has involved public disagreements between Senator Rafael Barón Duluc and Deputy Francisco Villegas. Critics note that while the two paths differ—one prioritizing immediate municipal status and the other seeking broader simultaneous restructuring—the Congress has mechanisms to merge such initiatives to reach a consensus. The decision carries implications for the governance and territorial planning of a region vital to the country's tourism sector.
