Övertorneå election: Socialdemokraterna becomes largest party after recount

The final election results for the Övertorneå municipality have been determined following a review of previously disqualified votes by the Norrbotten County Administrative Board. The recount, decided by a margin of only nine votes, has shifted the political landscape of the municipality.

Socialdemokraterna (S) has emerged as the largest party with 22 percent of the vote and 6 mandates. They narrowly overtook Centerpartiet (C), which holds 21.62 percent of the vote and 5 mandates. Hans Palo of the Socialdemokraterna stated that the party has received ‘fantastic resonance’ for its policies and is now seeking cooperation with other parties to form a majority.

The Centerpartiet-led governing bloc is losing power in the municipality. With 25 total mandates in the municipal council, 13 are required to form a majority. Other parties holding seats include Sjukvårdspartiet (5), Framtid S (3), Kristdemokraterna (3), Sverigedemokraterna (2), and Vänsterpartiet (1).
