Swedish municipal election shifts

In recent Swedish municipal elections, the Social Democrats have emerged as the largest party in both Gagnef and Övertorneå, overtaking the Center Party.

In Gagnef, the Center Party saw a 2.4 percentage point decline compared to 2022, allowing the Social Democrats to become the largest party with 20.5 percent of the vote. Local councilor Fredrik Jarl noted that losses in areas like Björbo were linked to debates over wind power and the closure of a care home. Although the shift in vote share occurred, both parties maintained the same number of mandates.

In Övertorneå, a recount by the Norrbotten County Administrative Board involving previously disqualified votes resulted in the Social Democrats becoming the largest party with 22 percent of the vote and 6 mandates. This narrow victory, decided by only nine votes, allowed them to overtake the Center Party, which holds 21.62 percent and 5 mandates. The shift signals a loss of power for the Center Party-led governing bloc, as the Social Democrats seek cooperation with other parties to reach the 13 mandates required for a majority.
