France expands fuel relief to €1.4 billion amid rising energy costs

The French government has expanded its energy relief package to a total of €1.4 billion to combat soaring fuel prices driven by Middle East conflicts. An additional €450 million has been allocated to support households and key industrial sectors.

Key measures include a €100 fuel allowance for approximately 5.5 million high-mileage commuters, an increase from the previous 3 million beneficiaries. The program targets workers who live at least 15 kilometers from their workplace or drive at least 8,000 business kilometers annually, with income thresholds adjusted to include more low-income households.

To support vital industries, the government is extending fuel cost coverage of up to 70 percent for the agriculture, construction, and commercial fishing sectors through the end of the year. Commercial fishermen will also have access to zero-interest loans to address liquidity issues. Additionally, the tax-free threshold for employer-provided fuel bonuses has been raised to €1,000 per year. These measures come amid rising social tensions and protests from farmers and fishermen as diesel and petrol prices reach new highs.
