Viareggio and Fermo launch 2026 Blue Flag beach initiatives in Italy

Viareggio marked its 29th consecutive Blue Flag award in 2026, but the symbolic flag was absent from the main promenade. Former councilor Alessandro Santini questioned the municipality and the Port Authority about the missing flag and lack of delivery to beach establishments. Neither the city officials nor the Foundation for Environmental Education have provided an explanation.

Fermo opened its 2026 seaside season with both a Blue Flag and a Yellow Flag, emphasizing sustainable tourism. The municipality, together with the Port Authority, a rescue cooperative, the Red Cross and local tourism agencies, hired 130 lifeguards to staff 70 towers along the coast. New outdoor fitness and dog areas were also inaugurated, showcasing a public‑private partnership aimed at improving safety and services for visitors.

Both towns are using the Blue Flag designation to promote high water quality, environmental management and tourist appeal along Italy’s Adriatic and Tuscan coasts.
