Sara Duterte impeachment trial focuses on alleged P1.6B unexplained wealth

The impeachment trial of Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte continues as forensic financial analyst Alexander Cabrera provides testimony regarding alleged unexplained wealth. Cabrera testified that a conservative estimate of undeclared assets belonging to Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, totals P817.87 million for the period of 2022 to 2025. However, Cabrera noted that if more aggressive accounting methods were used and if confidential funds were included, the total could reach between P1.5 billion and P1.6 billion.

The prosecution's findings allege that Duterte's Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALNs) were untruthful and that she participated in various businesses while serving as Vice President. The defense is expected to challenge these findings.

In response to the proceedings, Manases Carpio expressed that he felt like “collateral damage” in the trial. Meanwhile, fact-checking reports have clarified that while the Supreme Court dismissed certain petitions regarding the Senate's voting thresholds, it did not dismiss the impeachment case itself, which remains ongoing.
