Victoria Mayor removes controversial agenda item and proposes unhoused supports

Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto has taken the rare step of removing a presentation regarding an international conflict from the city council agenda. Alto stated the decision was made because the materials were “neither civil nor kind” and addressed a matter beyond the council’s authority and capacity to act upon. She emphasized the importance of maintaining city hall as a safe space for civil discourse.

Separately, the Victoria City Council is considering a motion to explore safer daytime alternatives and support services for the city’s unhoused population. The motion, introduced by Mayor Alto and Councillors Matt Dell and Susan Kim, seeks to identify appropriate locations for residents living in parks and on streets to access health, housing, and other essential supports. The proposal involves potential collaboration with Island Health and BC Housing to secure operational funding and property for these services.
