Victoria launches hydrogen and electric heavy‑vehicle trials to cut freight emissions

Toll Group will introduce two hydrogen‑powered prime movers on a dedicated steel freight route between Hastings and Geelong, scheduled for the second half of 2026. The trucks, supported by Viva Energy’s hydrogen refuelling hub opened in 2025, are expected to avoid about 80,000 litres of diesel annually and prevent roughly 208 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Separately, the Victorian Transport Association has commenced an Electric Heavy Vehicle Trial, showcasing Mercedes‑Benz eActros and Fuso eCanter electric trucks. The trial, launched by Minister Melissa Horne, involves operators such as Cahill Transport, whose eActros is already reporting reliable performance and positive driver feedback. Both initiatives aim to demonstrate the practicality of zero‑emission heavy‑vehicle technologies in Victoria’s road freight sector.
