Australia and NZ electric transport rollout expands

Overview

Since June 2025 Australian and New Zealand authorities and operators have accelerated electric‑vehicle deployment. Early milestones included modular bus‑charging gantries in Sydney, a UK depot upgrade for battery‑electric buses, and New Energy Transport’s $5 million fund for 20 electric prime‑mover trucks that completed the first end‑to‑end electric freight run Sydney–Canberra. The New South Wales Government launched a $6.5 billion, ten‑year programme to acquire at least 1,700 electric buses and refurbish 17 depots, while Volvo introduced its BZL articulated electric bus in Perth and Sydney. Woolworths and Zenobē secured the nation’s largest electric‑truck deployment of 148 battery‑electric delivery trucks, with CEFC financing extending rollout across NSW, VIC, QLD, WA and SA by late 2026. Volvo Group Australia began producing battery‑electric trucks at its Wacol plant, appointing Linfox as the first customer and stressing the need for coordinated policy and charging infrastructure. New Energy Transport placed its first Volvo FH heavy‑duty electric prime mover in service for Unilever, funded by the CEFC. In July 2026 Foton Mobility Services scaled electric‑bus production in South Nowra, NSW, while Volvo Group Australia and New Energy Transport unveiled the first locally built Volvo FH heavy‑duty electric trucks in Sydney, targeting 20 electric trucks by year‑end. The latest update adds that Volvo Trucks is now fitting up to 75 % recycled plastic and FSC‑certified wood veneers in its VNL and VNR heavy‑duty models to cut production emissions. Under a financing package with Volvo Financial Services and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, NET will add 11 more Volvo FH electric prime movers over the next year, expanding the Unilever‑linked fleet. Volvo also rolled out the first Australian‑built OEM electric trucks from its Wacol plant, with Linfox operating the inaugural unit, and opened a 21,000‑sq‑m automated parts‑distribution centre in Minto to store traction batteries and BEV components.
