Victoria reports falling crime rates amid record retail theft
New data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals a mixed landscape for crime in Victoria. Overall criminal incident rates have fallen by 4.6 per cent, with motor vehicle theft down 5.2 per cent and burglary decreasing by 19.9 per cent. The number of victims has also seen its largest decrease in five years, dropping by 7.6 per cent.
However, retail crime remains a critical issue. Theft from retail stores reached a record high, with 37,398 offences recorded in the 12 months leading to June 2026. This averages to approximately 102 thefts per day. While overall offences at retail locations fell by 3 per cent, the Australian Retail Council noted that the scale of offending continues to place immense pressure on workers and customers, highlighting that 14 assaults occur at retail locations daily.
In response to crime trends, the Victorian Government is implementing tougher bail laws, which have contributed to a 32 per cent increase in bail refusals in the Magistrates’ Court. The government also plans to recruit 200 more Police Protection Officers and 400 reservists to enhance community safety.
