Victoria crime rate and retail theft trends

Overview

Crime statistics in Victoria show a decline in overall crime rates alongside a significant rise in retail theft. Data from the Crime Statistics Agency indicates that total recorded offences and victimisation rates have fallen, driven largely by decreases in burglaries and motor vehicle theft.

Despite this general downward trend, retail theft has reached record levels, with approximately 102 thefts occurring daily. Industry representatives have suggested that cost-of-living pressures may be a contributing factor. Retailers have also reported that the scale of offending is placing pressure on staff and customers, noting that 14 assaults occur at retail locations every day.

In response to these trends, the Victorian Government is implementing tougher bail laws, which have led to a 32 per cent increase in bail refusals in the Magistrates’ Court. Additionally, the government plans to increase personnel by recruiting 200 Police Protection Officers and 400 reservists to improve community safety.
