Video game industry leaders discuss development philosophy and preservation
FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has stated that the studio deliberately avoids following a fixed development formula to prevent their games from becoming repetitive or stagnant. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki explained that the absence of rigid rules allows the studio to reinvent itself with each project, such as Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series, by focusing on what the team finds genuinely interesting rather than adhering to a set mantra.
Separately, veteran game director Hideki Kamiya addressed the industry debate regarding physical versus digital media. While noting that he personally has transitioned entirely to digital purchases, Kamiya emphasized that his primary concern is the preservation of video games. He urged intellectual property holders to ensure that titles remain playable for future generations, regardless of whether they are distributed via physical discs or digital formats.
