Video game industry trends focus on remakes and preservation

The video game industry is seeing a significant rise in remakes and remasters, driven by market demand, consumer nostalgia, and the need to mitigate financial risks. As development and marketing costs for AAA titles can exceed $300 million, companies are increasingly opting to rework existing intellectual properties with modern technology rather than investing in entirely new concepts. Bruna Simões, CEO of Thunder Games, notes that the high cost of large-scale launches makes the uncertainty of new ideas less attractive compared to the guaranteed consumer base of established franchises.

Parallel to this commercial trend is the challenge of game preservation. While digital distribution provides widespread access to active ecosystems, physical collections serve a different purpose by preserving the original context, including manuals, box art, and hardware. Institutions like the Library of Congress treat video games as complex objects requiring the preservation of source code, operating systems, and original hardware to ensure long-term availability, as physical media and obsolete consoles are subject to deterioration and failure.
