Višegrad commemorates 34th anniversary of the ‘Live Burial’ war crimes

On 14 June 2022, the Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK) marked the 34th anniversary of the mass killing known as the “Live Burials” in Višegrad. Approximately 70 Bosniak civilians, many women, children and the elderly, were immolated in the house of Adem Omeragić on Pionirska Street, including a two‑day‑old infant. A similar atrocity occurred two weeks later at Bikavac, where another 70 civilians were burned.

Survivor testimony was given before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and the courts have sentenced the perpetrators: Milan Lukić received a life term, his cousin Sredoje Lukić 27 years, and Radomir Šušnjar 20 years. UDIK continues to document the crimes, publish court decisions and call on regional institutions to respect the memory of the victims and address ongoing denial and relativisation of the atrocities.

The organization urged authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the surrounding region to act responsibly toward the victims and uphold the principles of remembrance and moral accountability.
