Vienna Airport transport: CAT introduces replacement buses amid rail disruptions
The City Airport Train (CAT) has introduced a replacement bus service to connect Vienna city center with Vienna Airport following a cable fire at Praterstern station on August 12. The bus service, which begins on August 24, will run up to five times per hour between Wien Mitte and the airport terminal.
The disruption is compounded by planned rail renovations on the S-Bahn Stammstrecke, which will affect the connection between Wien Mitte and the airport until autumn 2027. During this period, travelers can also utilize long-distance trains (RJX, RJ, IC) from Vienna Hauptbahnhof or Meidling as an alternative.
Upon the completion of renovations in late 2027, the CAT will resume rail operations with a new fleet of Stadler Rail Kiss trains. These new five-part compositions will offer increased capacity with 300 seats and premium amenities including Wi-Fi, USB ports, and specialized luggage areas.
