Vienna rail and airport transport disruptions
Overview
A cable fire discovered near the Praterstern station in Vienna around 1:30 AM caused significant damage to the rail network, requiring the replacement of approximately 20 kilometers of cable. The incident disrupted S-Bahn services, including the suspension of traffic between Wien Praterstern and Quartier Belvedere, as well as on the S7 line between Wien Mitte and Geiselbergstraße.
In response to the disruption, the City Airport Train (CAT) is implementing an early transition to replacement bus services starting August 24, 2026. Between 7 AM and 7 PM, premium Setra coaches will operate at 12-minute intervals between Wien Mitte (The Mall at Marxergasse 1b) and Arrival Terminal 3 at the airport, with a journey time of approximately 21 minutes. Outside of peak hours, buses will run roughly every 15 minutes.
While the bus service was originally intended to coincide with scheduled rail renovations on the S-Bahn Stammstrecke, the fire necessitated this earlier response. These renovations are projected to affect airport connections until autumn 2027. During this period, travelers can also utilize long-distance trains (RJX, RJ, IC) from Vienna Hauptbahnhof or Meidling. Following the completion of renovations in late 2027, the CAT plans to resume rail operations using a new fleet of Stadler Rail Kiss trains, which will offer increased capacity and premium amenities.
