Vienna and Chemnitz implement urban greening and climate adaptation strategies

Urban centers in Austria and Germany are implementing new strategies to combat climate change through greening initiatives and improved public space management.

In Vienna, the city has developed a “Strategy Plan for Public Space in the Inner City.” Designed to accommodate a high density of residents, workers, and tourists, the plan utilizes a modular toolkit to recommend specific measures for greenery, shading, cooling, and urban furniture. The approach focuses on understanding local characteristics through spider diagrams and utilizing historical context to guide modern planning.

In Chemnitz, Germany, the “Karree 49” project is advancing facade greening efforts to reduce urban heat islands and create habitats for wildlife. Supported by EFRE funding, the project includes greening the schoolyard of the Oberschule am Körnerplatz with climbing plants like clematis and chocolate vine. Additionally, the local landlord GGG will participate by greening gable walls on Fürstenstraße to contribute to the city’s climate adaptation goals.
