Viennale 2026 to host international auteur cinema in Vienna
The 64th Viennale is scheduled to take place from October 22 to November 3, 2026, in Vienna. The international auteur film festival will feature a program highlighting Austrian film history alongside major cinematic rediscoveries, including works by Hollywood director Robert Aldrich.
The festival is set to open with the 21-minute 70mm work “Forever…Forever” by Austrian filmmaker Johann Lurf. The piece, which was filmed over 22 months at the Ottenstein reservoir in the Waldviertel region, will be accompanied by a live musical performance by Dorian Concept.
In addition to new discoveries, the festival will include specialized monographs and curated themes. These include a retrospective of Phil Solomon’s work, exploring the intersection of abstraction and materiality, and a focus on the amateur film club scene in socialist Yugoslavia.
