Vienna approves new cycling infrastructure projects

The City of Vienna has approved three new cycling infrastructure projects in the Alsergrund, Donaustadt, and Liesing districts. These initiatives aim to improve connections, close existing gaps in the network, and enhance safety by separating bicycle traffic from pedestrian walkways.

In Alsergrund, the Gürtel cycle path near the Nußdorfer Straße U6 station will be reorganized. The project includes straightening a 110-meter section to create a more direct route from Sobieskigasse and adding a new crossing option over the Währinger Gürtel. The redesign will also separate cyclists from pedestrians in front of local businesses to create more sidewalk space. Completion is expected by the end of 2026.

In Donaustadt, a new two-way cycle path will be constructed along Erzherzog-Karl-Straße between Polgarstraße and Smolagasse, replacing the current multi-purpose lane with a lightweight structure separated by plastic sleepers. Additionally, projects will address gaps in the Liesingbach cycle path.

As part of the “Raus aus dem Asphalt” (Out of the Asphalt) initiative, the projects will also focus on urban greening. This includes unsealing surfaces, creating new green spaces, and planting trees to improve the public environment.
