Vienna cycling infrastructure and urban greening
Overview
Vienna is expanding its cycling infrastructure and urban greening initiatives. Initial developments included the completion of a 400-meter two-way cycle path in the Leopoldstadt district, which connects the 2nd and 20th districts along the Danube Canal and incorporates new greenery and bicycle parking.
Following this, the city approved three additional projects in the Alsergrund, Donaustadt, and Liesing districts. These projects aim to close network gaps and improve safety by separating bicycle traffic from pedestrians. In Alsergrund, a section of the Gürtel cycle path will be reorganized to create a more direct route, while in Donaustadt, a new two-way path will replace a multi-purpose lane. These efforts are part of the “Raus aus dem Asphalt” (Out of the Asphalt) initiative, which focuses on unsealing surfaces and planting trees to enhance the urban environment.
