Vienna asbestos contamination uncovered on city streets, Greenpeace calls for action

Environmental group Greenpeace has identified asbestos‑containing asphalt on eight streets in Vienna and surrounding areas, confirming more than 65 sites in total. The organization set up an interactive online map for residents to report additional finds and is demanding that the Austrian government allocate disaster‑fund resources for cleanup and investigation.

Samples from the suspected sites have been sent to a laboratory, with results expected in the summer. Civil engineering expert Heinz Kropiunik has already verified the presence of asbestos fibers, warning that vehicle traffic can release carcinogenic particles. Health effects remain uncertain, but officials are urged to prioritize remediation, especially on heavily trafficked roads.

Greenpeace also reported five new suspected locations, emphasizing the need for comprehensive documentation to prevent further exposure during construction work.
