Vienna commemorates Battle of Vienna anniversary amid Sobieski monument dispute

On the 343rd anniversary of the Battle of Vienna, discussions continue regarding the commemoration of King Jan III Sobieski at Kahlenberg. While a granite pedestal with an inscription currently stands at the site, a full monument has yet to be realized despite previous promises of an international design competition between Vienna and Kraków.

In 2018, a proposed equestrian sculpture by Czesław Dźwigaj was rejected by a Viennese advisory body. While the city points to existing memorials such as Sobieskiplatz and Sobieskigasse as sufficient, proponents and members of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) continue to advocate for the fulfillment of the original commitment to build a monument at Kahlenberg.

In contrast to the unresolved monument, the Polish National Sanctuary at St. Joseph's Church on Kahlenberg has undergone significant restoration. The sanctuary, maintained by the Congregation of the Resurrection of Christ since 1906, houses historical artifacts including the Sobieski Chapel with frescoes by Jan Henryk Rosen. Private donors, such as Marek Małecki, have supported the preservation of the site, including the repair of deteriorating elements like the pulpit.
