Vienna completes Stadionbrücke modernization for tram extension
The City of Vienna has completed the modernization of the Stadionbrücke, a connection between the 2nd and 3rd districts. The 82-meter-long and 26-meter-wide bridge was reinforced to accommodate the extension of tram line 18.
Traffic release is scheduled for Friday, August 28, one week ahead of the original plan. Starting September 5, tram line 18 will operate as a major east-west tangent, running from U6 Burggasse-Stadthalle through Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof, and St. Marx, continuing through the Prater to the U2 Stadion station. The new route includes seven new stops, improving connectivity to all five U-Bahn lines, various S-Bahn lines, and ÖBB long-distance services. The project aims to better integrate urban development areas like Viertel Zwei and Village, as well as the Prater and the future long-distance bus terminal at the stadium, into the public transport network.
