Vienna public transport infrastructure upgrades

Overview

Infrastructure developments in Vienna involve both rail and tram network upgrades. In late July and early August 2026, the northern Vienna S-Bahn network faced partial closures to facilitate the installation of the ETCS Level 2 train-control system, with replacement buses operating between Floridsdorf, Handelskai, Praterstern, and Kagran.

Following these initial upgrades, further expansion and modernization projects were announced. A 3.1-kilometer extension of tram line 18, connecting Schlachthausgasse to Ernst-Happel-Stadion, was scheduled to begin operations on September 5, 2026. This extension includes seven new stops and is expected to serve approximately six million passengers annually while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 1,300 tons per year. To support this, the City of Vienna completed the modernization of the Stadionbrücke, an 82-meter-long bridge reinforced to accommodate the tram line. Traffic on the bridge is scheduled for release on August 28, one week ahead of schedule. Once operational, line 18 will serve as a major east-west tangent running from U6 Burggasse-Stadthalle through Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof, and St. Marx to the U2 Stadion station, improving connectivity to all five U-Bahn lines and various S-Bahn and ÖBB services.

Additionally, ÖBB announced a major modernization of the Vienna S-Bahn Stammstrecke, involving a planned 14-month closure of the central section between Wien Hauptbahnhof and Wien Praterstern starting September 7, 2026, to upgrade stations, bridges, and infrastructure to allow for increased frequency and modern trains.
