Vienna protests erupt over Austrian university budget cuts

Tens of thousands of students, researchers, and university staff gathered in Vienna to protest the Austrian government's planned budget for public universities for the 2028–2030 period. Under the slogan ‘Red Alert – #SaveUnis!’, demonstrators expressed opposition to a proposed 16 billion euro allocation, arguing that a minimum of 18 billion euros is required to offset inflation and rising operational costs.

The Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH) and the Austrian Universities Conference (uniko) warn that the current proposal represents a hidden funding cut of 10% to 15%. University rectors have cautioned that these financial constraints could lead to the elimination of approximately 10% of staff positions—affecting roughly 6,800 jobs—as well as reductions in teaching offerings, research capabilities, and healthcare services in university hospitals.

While the demonstrations were largely peaceful, organizers estimated that up to 50,000 people participated in the march through central Vienna. The federal government has until October 31 to revise the budget, though officials have indicated the current figures may be final.
