Vienna S-Bahn main line closed for 14 months for modernization

The Vienna S-Bahn main line (Stammstrecke) between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed for approximately 14 months, effective September 7, 2026. The closure is expected to last until the end of October 2027. This disruption affects major stations including Quartier Belvedere, Rennweg, and Wien Mitte, impacting approximately 250,000 daily passengers.

The closure follows a cable fire in a signal box near Praterstern and is part of extensive modernization efforts by ÖBB. Planned works include renewing viaducts, bridges, retaining walls, and track systems, as well as extending platforms and modernizing stations to accommodate longer trains with more seating.

Initial assessments from ÖBB and Wiener Linien indicate that while the first days saw delays and technical issues due to a new digital train protection system, the overall impact on the public transport network has been manageable. To mitigate the disruption, increased services have been implemented on U-Bahn lines U1, U2, U4, and U6, alongside additional tram services and a dedicated commuter shuttle (SH6) between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse.
