Vienna S-Bahn infrastructure modernization

Overview

The Vienna S-Bahn main line (Stammstrecke) between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof has been closed for approximately 14 months, effective September 7, 2026. The closure, expected to last until the end of October 2027, follows a cable fire in a signal box near Praterstern and is part of extensive modernization efforts by ÖBB.

Planned works include renewing viaducts, bridges, retaining walls, and track systems, as well as extending platforms and modernizing stations to accommodate longer trains. The disruption affects major stations including Quartier Belvedere, Rennweg, and Wien Mitte, impacting approximately 250,000 daily passengers. To mitigate the impact, authorities have increased services on U-Bahn lines U1, U2, U4, and U6, alongside additional tram services and a dedicated commuter shuttle between Meidling and Längenfeldgasse.
