Vienna street dust found more hazardous than in other cities
A study by Polish geophysicist Sylwia Klaudia Dytłow shows that street dust in Vienna contains far higher levels of health‑hazardous particles than dust sampled in other European metropolises. The research examined magnetic properties and polymer composition of microplastic particles (MPs) collected with a handheld magnetic separator across different Viennese locations. In the magnetic fraction—comprising brake wear and combustion residues—up to seven times more MPs were detected compared with the non‑magnetic fraction. The amount of microplastics correlated with traffic intensity, indicating that local environmental factors beyond direct traffic influence particle distribution.
Vienna’s Green Party seized on the findings, warning that the dust “contains a lot of microplastics, heavy metals and carcinogenic substances” and blaming the city administration for neglecting such health risks. Spokeswoman Tina Wirnsberger called for a monitoring program analogous to air‑quality surveillance and said a council motion will be introduced to make street‑dust data publicly available.
