Vienna protests erupt over university budget cuts

Tens of thousands of students, academics, and public employees marched through Vienna to protest planned government funding for Austrian universities. Organizers estimated participation between 30,000 and 50,000 people, while police initially reported approximately 20,000.

The demonstration, held under the slogan ‘Alarmstufe Rot – Unis retten!’, was triggered by the federal government’s decision to allocate approximately 16 billion euros for the 2028–2030 period. The Austrian Universities Conference (uniko) argues that at least 18 billion euros are required to offset inflation and rising costs. University leaders warned that the current budget could lead to a 10% reduction in staff, particularly affecting young academics on temporary contracts, and could cause shortages in university clinics.

The Austrian government maintains that the budget is necessary to address the national deficit and stabilize the state budget. While the protest was largely peaceful, police reported that one officer was injured during an incident involving masked individuals, and six people were detained for violating anti-masking laws.
