Vienna expands tram line 18 and announces S-Bahn modernization

Vienna is expanding its tram network with the extension of line 18, scheduled to begin operations on September 5. The 3.1-kilometer route will connect Schlachthausgasse to the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, adding seven new stops and providing a direct link between the 2nd and 3rd districts. The project includes environmental improvements such as 200 new trees, over 10,000 square meters of greenery, and 2,150 meters of new bicycle paths. It is expected to serve approximately six million passengers annually and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 1,300 tons per year.

In a separate infrastructure development, ÖBB has announced major modernization works for the Vienna S-Bahn. Starting September 7, 2026, the central section of the Stammstrecke between Wien Hauptbahnhof and Wien Praterstern will close for approximately 14 months. This project aims to modernize stations, bridges, and railway infrastructure to allow for longer, more modern trains and increased frequency.

Additionally, in Basel, construction is set to begin on August 31, 2026, to renew tram tracks and underground utilities between Claraplatz and Kaserne. The project, involving BVB and IWB, will include upgrading stops for barrier-free access and planting additional trees, with work expected to continue until spring 2028.
