Viesca, Mexico: 13 clandestine graves discovered in Salitrillo Dunes

Members of the Grupo Vida Laguna search collective have located 13 clandestine graves containing human remains in the Salitrillo Dunes, located in the municipality of Viesca, Coahuila. The search operations, which began on September 1, are taking place in a desert area approximately 70 kilometers from Torreón.

Searchers have recovered various skeletal fragments, including skulls, ribs, phalanges, and teeth, as well as orthodontic devices that may assist in identification. Silvia Ortiz, founder of Grupo Vida Laguna, noted that many of the remains show signs of calcination, which complicates forensic analysis and reduces the likelihood of obtaining sufficient genetic material for DNA testing.

In addition to DNA studies, investigators hope to use dental records and orthodontic information to identify the victims. While the sex of the individuals has not been officially determined, the recovery of items such as bra hooks and underwires suggests that at least one of the victims may be female.
