Viet My Medical Company investigation leads to nine arrests

Vietnamese authorities have launched a major investigation into Viet My Medical Investment Joint Stock Company regarding medical equipment bidding and corruption. As of October 1, 2026, investigators have prosecuted nine defendants across three charges: smuggling, violating accounting regulations causing serious consequences, and receiving bribes. Authorities have recovered 261,000 USD and 118 billion VND.

Key figures detained include Bui Chan Phuong, former Chairman of Viet My; Ha Van Nam, the company's Director; and Tran Thi Hong Hanh, the person in charge of accounting. The investigation has also expanded to high-ranking officials, including Tran Van Thuan, a former Deputy Minister of Health, who was arrested for bribery. Additionally, Le Dinh Thanh Son, Director of Phu Tho General Hospital, and Nguyen Huy Ngoc, former Vice Chairman of the Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee, have also been detained on bribery charges.

Data indicates that between 2018 and 2026, Viet My participated in 276 bidding packages, winning 246 with a total value of approximately 5,947 billion VND. The company provided various high-tech medical devices, including linear accelerators and cancer treatment equipment. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the full scale of the involvement of these individuals and their connections to medical facilities and management officials.
