Vietnam advances DNA sampling to identify fallen soldiers

Authorities in Vietnam are making significant progress in identifying the remains of fallen soldiers through DNA sampling programs. In Ho Chi Minh City, the local command has completed DNA sampling for over 9,800 martyr graves across 18 cemeteries, reaching 100% of its current plan. Of these, 7,104 graves met the requirements for DNA testing. The city plans to hand over these samples to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology for forensic examination.

In An Giang province, the identification process has also yielded significant findings. During sampling at the Ha Tien martyr cemetery, teams discovered various personal artifacts buried with the remains, including faded portrait photographs, combs, and belts. These items are being preserved and cross-referenced with existing records to serve as supplementary information alongside DNA results. As of August 17, 2026, An Giang authorities have opened 3,055 graves and collected 2,159 DNA samples, with 535 samples already submitted for forensic analysis.
