Vietnam advances green economy through sustainable consumption policies

Vietnam is advancing its transition toward a green economy through strategic policies aimed at sustainable production and consumption. The legal framework, bolstered by the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection and a national action plan for 2021–2030, focuses on reducing resource extraction, minimizing waste, and promoting a circular economy.

Recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment indicates that 13 additional products, primarily biodegradable plastic packaging, have obtained the Vietnam Eco-Label certification over the last two years. This suggests that certification mechanisms are becoming more integrated into business practices.

Despite these advancements, economic barriers remain. A 2025 survey by PwC Vietnam revealed that while 69% of consumers are willing to pay higher prices for environmentally friendly food, price remains a decisive factor in purchasing decisions, particularly in rural areas. Experts emphasize that for green consumption to become a primary driver of sustainability, eco-friendly products must become more affordable, accessible, and transparently certified.
