Vietnamese enterprise adaptation to global market standards
Overview
Vietnamese businesses are adapting to evolving global requirements to maintain competitiveness, particularly in the United States and the European Union. While the US remains a vital market for food, footwear, and garments, exporters are being advised to move beyond price competitiveness toward strategies emphasizing supply chain management, delivery flexibility, and brand-building through specific consumer segment targeting.
A critical component of this adaptation is the green transition and the adoption of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria. With the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) approaching, accurate emission data is becoming a mandatory ‘passport’ for goods entering the EU. Experts warn that without verified data, importers may apply default emission rates, increasing costs for exporters. To mitigate this, Vietnam is advancing its carbon market development by integrating remote sensing, big data, and artificial intelligence to ensure the transparency and reliability of carbon credits.
Technological integration and digital transformation remain central to these shifts. Companies must overcome fragmented data systems to master traceability and auditable operational data. This is essential for meeting the ‘data test’ required to enter global supply chains.
Parallel to these technical shifts, Vietnamese enterprises continue to expand their global footprint. Sectors such as telecommunications, automotive, and consumer goods are seeing increased international presence. For example, Viettel reported that its international revenue reached $3.34 billion in 2025, marking nine consecutive years of double-digit growth in foreign markets. Despite tempered expectations in the first half of 2026, a survey by the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam indicates that US companies maintain long-term confidence, continuing to invest in manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure.
