Vietnam advances major energy projects as hydro expansion proceeds and LNG plant remains stalled

The Trị An hydroelectric power plant in Đồng Nai province is entering a high‑intensity construction phase for its 200 MW expansion, backed by EVN with an investment of nearly VND 3.96 trillion. The project, covering 94.6 ha, aims to add about 113 GWh of annual generation, improve peak‑hour capacity and cut fuel costs.

In contrast, the Bạc Liêu liquefied natural gas (LNG) power project, a $4 billion venture approved in 2020 and led by Singapore’s Delta Offshore Energy, has yet to break ground after six years. Delays stem from land‑acquisition setbacks, incomplete permits, unresolved power‑purchase‑agreement talks with EVN and pending approval of a 500 kV transmission line. Provincial authorities have been urged to accelerate land clearance and coordinate with the investor to restore the timetable.
