Vietnam advances metro link to Ho Chi Minh City and highway expansion for Long Thanh Airport

Vietnam is planning a 35.1‑km urban rail line (Metro Line 2) that will connect Thu Dau Mot with the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. The route will include 24 stations—13 underground and 11 elevated—linking directly to the existing metro network at S5 (Bình Dương) and Tao Đàn (Line 2). Trains will run on standard gauge tracks, electrified throughout, with design speeds of up to 110 km/h on elevated sections and 90 km/h underground. A 33‑ha depot at Hiệp Bình Phước will support operations.

In parallel, a 3.2‑km section of the Ho Chi Minh City–Long Thanh–Dầu Giây expressway is being widened from four to eight lanes to improve access to the forthcoming Long Thanh International Airport. After eight months of work, the project is about 60 % complete and is scheduled for full completion by the end of 2026, coinciding with the airport’s planned commercial opening on 1 December 2026. The upgraded highway will serve as the main corridor for traffic between Ho Chi Minh City and the new airport.
