Vietnam advises against overnight phone charging

Experts in Vietnam warn that keeping a smartphone plugged in throughout the night can shorten battery life and increase safety risks. Modern phones use smart battery management that reduces charge current once the battery reaches 100 %, but prolonged connection still subjects the cell to many small charge cycles, which over time reduces capacity.

Charging generates heat, especially with high‑power adapters or when the device is placed under blankets or on insulated surfaces. Elevated temperature accelerates wear of lithium‑ion cells and can affect internal components. Low‑quality or non‑certified chargers and cables may overheat or short‑circuit, posing additional hazards.

To protect the device, users are advised to unplug the charger once the battery reaches a sufficient level, use original or certified accessories, and place the phone on a ventilated surface while charging. These practices help maintain battery health and reduce the risk of overheating or accessory damage.
