Vietnam aims to expand role in global semiconductor value chain

Vietnam is seeking to deepen its involvement in the global semiconductor industry, driven by rising demand from artificial intelligence, data centers, and electric vehicles. The country is benefiting from global manufacturing shifts, leveraging its electronics industry, regional trade links, and competitive labor costs.

Between 2006 and 2025, Vietnam’s semiconductor exports grew at a compound annual growth rate of 31.8%, while imports grew by 30%. In 2023, the nation exported $32.4 billion in integrated circuits. As of late 2025, the Ministry of Science and Technology reported approximately 170 foreign direct investment projects in the semiconductor sector, with registered capital approaching $11.6 billion.

The presence of major technology groups such as Samsung, Intel, and MediaTek provides opportunities for Vietnam to access advanced manufacturing processes and international networks. However, experts note that the country must focus on accumulating knowledge, technology, and management expertise to move into higher-value activities and ensure local firms can effectively absorb technology and participate in the supply chain.
