Munich Airport: Two major aviation incidents on same runway
Munich Airport has experienced two significant aviation incidents on the same runway within a few days.
On Saturday, August 16, a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner experienced a technical issue during takeoff. The aircraft failed to accelerate sufficiently, overran the runway, and its tail touched the ground during the rotation phase. The crew, after receiving warnings regarding potential tailstrike and tire pressure, circled for two hours to discharge fuel before making an emergency landing, during which several tires burst. No injuries were reported among the approximately 270 passengers and crew.
On Monday, August 18, a Lufthansa Airbus A380 arriving from San Francisco landed short of the runway threshold. The aircraft struck and damaged the runway approach lighting system. All 351 passengers on board disembarked safely without injury.
The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has launched formal investigations into both incidents. Investigators have secured flight recorders from both aircraft to determine the causes, which may involve technical, human, or organizational factors. The Vietnamese government has instructed its aviation authorities to cooperate urgently with German investigators and to increase oversight of safety and maintenance procedures.
