Overview

On August 15, 2026, a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi experienced a technical incident during takeoff at Munich Airport. The BFU is also investigating a separate incident on the same runway involving a Lufthansa Airbus A380 that landed short of the threshold on August 18, damaging the approach lighting system. All 351 passengers on the Lufthansa flight were safe.

In response to the Vietnam Airlines incident, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has ordered a comprehensive investigation. He has tasked the Ministry of Construction to lead the inquiry in coordination with the Ministry of Finance and German authorities, following international aviation accident investigation protocols. The Ministry of Public Security will assist in verifying information to ensure aviation security. Authorities have been directed to conduct a thorough review of aircraft maintenance, technical inspection processes, and crew training to prevent future occurrences and uphold passenger rights.
