Vietnam tourism boom drives Cam Ranh airport expansion and record passenger traffic

Vietnam is upgrading its aviation infrastructure to match a rapid rise in tourism. The state‑owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has proposed an investment of roughly 12 000 billion VND for three key projects at Cam Ranh International Airport: a new Terminal 1 costing about 10 600 billion VND with a design capacity of 9 million passengers per year, a cargo terminal handling 50 000 tonnes annually, and additional aircraft parking spaces. When the projects are completed, total airport capacity is expected to reach 11 million passengers per year by January 2030.

In the first six months of 2026, Cam Ranh handled about 4.1 million passengers – 2.6 million of them international – operating over 21 500 flights and moving 7 453 tonnes of cargo. Annual forecasts project 8.3 million passengers, more than 45 100 flights and over 15 100 tonnes of cargo for the full year.

National airport traffic also surged, with total passenger throughput across Vietnam's airports reaching over 76 million in the January‑July period, a 7 % year‑on‑year increase. Hanoi’s tourism sector reflected the same momentum: in July 2026 the capital welcomed 3.16 million visitors, up 11.3 % from July 2025, generating 12.3 trillion VND in revenue (up 11.8 %). For the first seven months, Hanoi recorded 21.16 million visitors – a 15 % rise – including 5.31 million international guests (up 25 %) and total tourism revenue of 86.47 trillion VND (up 17.9 %).

Japanese tourism officials noted that Vietnam remains a top source market, with 396 500 Vietnamese visitors to Japan in the first half of 2026, an 8.7 % increase over the same period a year earlier, underscoring the broader regional growth in travel demand.
