Vietnam tourism boom fuels heritage tech and QR payments
Overview
The July tourism surge continued, with official data confirming 7.74 million overnight visitors in the first five months and international arrivals up 23.6 % year‑on‑year.
Authorities are turning historic sites into active cultural venues. The Thang Long Imperial Citadel and the Temple of Literature in Hanoi now host exhibitions, concerts and fashion shows, while Ngoc Rong Cave and the Trang An‑Ninh Binh Forestival feature immersive, music‑driven productions. The Museum of Women’s Vietnam opened a 3‑D‑mapping show, “Giao thời”, using projection, sound and interactive sensors to make heritage more accessible to younger visitors. New legislation supports digitisation of cultural patrimony across the country.
National Citizen Commercial Joint Stock Bank launched VietQR Global, a cross‑border QR‑code payment system. Tourists can pay instantly with Chinese, Korean, Thai, Laotian and Cambodian e‑wallets at Sun Group venues ranging from InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort to JW Marriott Phú Quốc Emerald Bay, further simplifying spending for visitors.
In mid‑July, more than 100 overseas Vietnamese youths from 32 countries arrived in Hanoi for the Vietnam Summer Camp 2026. Over 14 days they will travel 1,500 km to sites linked to President Hồ Chí Minh, heritage locations and naval academies, aiming to deepen cultural knowledge, language skills and volunteer engagement.
The central province of Lam Dong, newly merged with Đăk Nông and Bình Thuận, rolled out a “highlands‑forest‑sea” tourism campaign for the summer. Visitor numbers hit nearly 12 million in the first half of 2026, an 18 % rise, with 825,000 foreigners, generating about US$1.28 billion in revenue. New events include the 11th Da Lat Flower Festival and the reopening of Liên Khuông International Airport on 19 August.
