Vietnam and Russia deepen ties ahead of 2026 intergovernmental summit

Vietnam’s Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc met Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko in St. Petersburg on 5 June. The two officials agreed to intensify coordination for the 26th session of the Vietnam‑Russia Intergovernmental Committee, scheduled to be held in Vietnam in 2026, and to accelerate implementation of high‑level agreements outlined in the bilateral master plan through 2030.

They highlighted continued growth in two‑way trade, which rose 5.7 % in 2025, and pledged to expand cooperation in energy, oil and gas, nuclear power (including the Ninh Thuan 1 project), education, scientific research and cultural exchange. A visa‑exemption arrangement for group tourism was also discussed to facilitate travel for citizens and businesses.

Russian corporations VTB Bank, AFK Sistema and Novatek, represented at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, praised Vietnam’s dynamic economy and large market, expressing interest in expanding investment and seeking favourable conditions from Vietnamese authorities.
