Vietnam and US enhance technology use to locate war martyrs' remains
The Vietnamese Embassy in the United States is strengthening cooperation with American partners to support Vietnam’s 500-day campaign to search for, recover, and identify the remains of fallen soldiers. This humanitarian mission aims to recover approximately 7,000 sets of remains through intensified efforts, including matching DNA samples against a centralized database of relatives and clearing unexploded ordnance from former battlefields.
Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized the urgency of the mission, noting that aging veterans and the transformation of former battlefields into residential and industrial zones are erasing physical traces and firsthand accounts. To address these challenges, Vietnam seeks to combine field records and oral histories with US wartime archives, forensic anthropology, and advanced DNA technology. Vietnamese experts are expected to partner with specialists from Texas Tech University to facilitate this work.
