Vietnam recovers martyr remains and artifacts for DNA identification

Efforts to identify unidentified war martyrs are progressing across several regions in Vietnam through the recovery of remains and personal artifacts.

In Da Nang, authorities excavating the Que Hiep Martyrs Cemetery discovered a wallet containing photographs of a man and a woman at an unidentified grave. These relics are being used alongside biological samples for DNA testing to help locate surviving relatives. Officials in Que Son Trung commune are working to complete sampling for over 500 remaining unidentified graves by September 15.

In Ho Chi Minh City, search teams at Le Thi Rieng Park have recovered 605 sets of martyr remains since June, including 279 sets with accompanying artifacts. Recent operations at the site involved processing over 300 cubic meters of soil to expand the search area.

Additionally, in Quang Tri province, search teams recently discovered several sets of remains, including a mass grave of two martyrs near an Agribank branch in Quang Tri Ward. Recovered items such as backpacks, ammunition boxes, and military gear are being preserved to assist in the identification process.
