Vietnam faces heavy rain, landslides, and increased hydropower discharge
Vietnam is experiencing widespread heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, prompting various emergency responses across the country. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned of high-intensity rainfall, with potential levels exceeding 100mm within a three-hour period.
In Central Vietnam, regions from Quang Tri to Da Nang and eastern Quang Ngai are facing heavy to very heavy rain. In Lam Dong province, prolonged rainfall has caused significant landslides on National Highway 28B, particularly near the Dai Ninh pass, disrupting traffic and requiring emergency clearing by authorities. In Da Nang, local border guard units are on high alert, preparing to relocate residents from high-risk areas prone to flooding and landslides.
To manage rising water levels, the Tri An Hydropower Company has increased its spillway discharge to ensure reservoir safety. On September 24, the discharge rate was raised to 406 m3/s at 8:00 and further increased to 586 m3/s by 12:00. This has resulted in total downstream discharge ranging between 1,046 m3/s and 1,386 m3/s, affecting areas in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.
Economic impacts are also being reported, including a poultry farm in Thanh Hoa where approximately 60,000 chickens and ducks died due to flooding and heat stress, causing an estimated 10 billion VND in losses.
