Vietnam car loan interest rates rise toward 20% per year

Car loan borrowers in Vietnam are reporting sharp increases in floating interest rates following the expiration of initial promotional periods. According to reports from social media groups, some customers have seen their annual rates jump from 8-9% to as high as 16-19%.

Specific instances shared by borrowers include a loan that rose from 8.2% to 18% per year, and another with a 214 million VND balance facing a 19.8% interest rate. Users noted that floating rates are typically adjusted every three months.

Many of the reported cases involve loans at VPBank. Borrowers also highlighted that purchasing insurance alongside a loan does not necessarily prevent interest rates from rising significantly.
