Vietnam auto loan interest rate increases
Overview
Car loan borrowers in Vietnam are experiencing sharp increases in floating interest rates as initial promotional periods expire. Reports indicate that annual rates for some customers have jumped from approximately 8-9% to as high as 16-21%.
While the State Bank of Vietnam reports average lending rates for new loans between 8.3% and 10.5%, these figures may not reflect the actual costs faced by existing borrowers. Many customers are facing increased debt pressure due to these rising costs.
In response to rising defaults and debt recovery efforts, banks have begun auctioning collateralized assets. These liquidations include a range of vehicles, from common used cars to luxury models such as a blue Rolls-Royce Ghost being auctioned by VietinBank’s Ho Chi Minh City Branch 4.
